Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
St. Maarten – Parliament meets tomorrow at 2 p.m. to discuss with the main voting bureau and the civil registry department “discrepancies that occurred during and in preparation of the elections†in August.
According to the press release about the meeting there were (unspecified) discrepancies at the Pointe Blanche prison polling station. Voters used foreign ID’s and there was “a lack of privacy during the supporting of the candidate lists. At several polling stations there were “discrepancies in ballot counting.†Lastly, the press release states, there were discrepancies in the information political parties received about the placement of campaign material.
Changes to the electoral law, the increase in the number of polling stations and the implementation of electronic voting are some of the other points Members of Parliament wish to address.
The meeting has been requested by MPs Leona Marlin-Romeo (independent), Tamara Leonard (UP) and Cornelius de Weever (DP).
